Chapter 11: Ciara

My cheeks were burning with the intimacy of having told Rook how much I wanted him. I wasn’t used to being vulnerable, not in any way, and certainly not like that. How was I going to tell him that I’d never experienced any of this before?

The fae were so easy with each other, with their perfect bodies and their physical confidence. I knew that the Academy students were all adults with sex lives, visiting each other’s rooms at night. Evana had obliquely asked me on our first day if I ever wanted her to hang out in our sitting room if I had somebody come over. I’d glossed over the question, not sure back then what she had meant.

Now I knew.

Now, in a flash of understanding, I could see why the Directors had looked uncomfortable when they opened the trunk of all my delicate underthings. Part of the rite of passage of coming to the Academy was forming an elemental bond with another student. And if it was going to be Rook, then I’d be well satisfied.

I was just a little nervous, that was all.

Shaking off my uncertainty, I decided to walk back to the javelin field. I could still catch Rook before he finished his chore, and it would go faster if I helped. When I made my way along the trail to the low-lying sports field, I was sure it was the right choice. If I wanted to be with him, it should be now. All my years watching the world go by from my fortress of privilege made sure of that. I was going to reach out and take something, finally. Something that felt good to me.

No more isolation. No more fearing that if I formed bonds with the fae, I would not be able to command them.

As my feet moved faster along the dewy trail, I was ready to discard that idea entirely. Being with Rook was going to make my magic stronger. There was no way that was a bad thing, even if it didn’t fit exactly with my instructions on how to do well here.

But as I got closer to the benches where I’d left Rook, I saw that he was not alone.

He was still working on repairing the field when Owain came from the other direction and hailed him. I could only barely hear their conversation from where I was, but I stopped, not wanting them to know I was there.

“Rook, hold up,” Owain called out with an easy grin. “I was out in the far woods this morning, and I found one of your javelins. Here,” he said, proffering the charred piece of gaming equipment.

“Thanks. I’ll find out which idiot first-year sent this so far without gathering it back to them.” Rook continued with his work of cleaning up after the practice.

“Nice words,” Owain said. “Are you already so high and mighty that you’ve forgotten you’re a first-year too?”

“Of course not,” said the dark-haired fae. “You know who you just missed? The most-talked about member of our class.
